The issue of human rights involving companies is now one of the most important aspects which must be covered by global businesses in their supply chain. However, factory and agricultural workers, as well as indigenous communities in developing countries, have been suffering forced and slave labor, land deprivation with demand for low-cost and resources.
Under such circumstances, "UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights" was approved in June 2011, and introduced as “protect, respect, and remedy framework”. Both states and businesses are expected to play a significant role against human rights violations caused by businesses.
But recently there seem to be gaps between European/US businesses and Japanese businesses in recognition and speed of actions towards UNGPs.
Therefore, this session will discuss “global trends”, “case studies from European and Japanese businesses”, and “how they deal with human rights issues. It will explore the steps towards implementation of business and human rights.
